Security Devices
FeatureDescription
Ascending Size Serial NumberA serial number with each digit slightly increasing in height and width. Both horizontal and vertical formats have been used. Czech Republic and Slovakia are among the countries where this may be found.
Bar Code and NumeralsUsed mainly by banks for checks. Some countries have used these on banknotes. Scotland has a bar code, and Canada has used it with serial numbers. Sometimes magnetic.
Colored FibersFibers usually red, blue or green, that are added either into the pulp mix to be randomly flowed onto the paper as it is made, or distributed onto the drying paper in particular areas of the page forming bars of colored fibers, quite visible to the naked eye.
Embedded Security ThreadA high strength thread, sometimes magnetic, embedded into the paper at the beginning of the drying stage. Looks to the eye as a solid dark strip within the paper.
Face-Back Optical Registration Design (Transparent Register)A design technique where half of an image in a framed area is printed on the face, and the other half is printed on the back, in exact register, so when held to a light, the two half images form one full image.
Foil ImprintsShaped metal foil applied to the printed note, usually with an adhesive. Sometimes the foil is embossed with an image.
HologramShiny application to the note containing an image that changes in design and color depending upon the viewing angle.
Invisible PrintingDesigns printed with inks detectable only when viewed under bright sunlight or ultraviolet light. Sometimes used to replace the more expensive watermark on low value notes.
Latent ImpressionsPortions of the note containing sculptured engraving, making some legends or designs visible only when held to the light at certain angles.
KinegramSimilar to a foil imprint, the design and color changes at different viewing angles.
Metallic InkAn ink with very fine granules of metal, thus giving the ink a metallic sheen.
Micro PrintingVery small letters added to an intaglio printing plate, sometimes as single lines, or in multiple repeating lines forming a larger block in the underprint design. Intaglio printing keeps the design sharp and clear, but if the note is counterfeit the microprinted area usually becomes muddy and unclear.
Optical Variable Device (OVD)A foil that displays a three-dimensional image when viewed under proper lighting conditions. Similar to foil imprints.
Optically Variable InkAn ink when printed in a special pattern changes shades when viewed and then tilted slightly.
PlanchettesTiny multicolored discs of paper embedded into the pulp mix or randomly sprinkled throughout the paper as it is drying.
Raised MarksA type of braille design in notes, enabling blind people to identify note values.
Segmented Security ThreadA continuous security thread, usually wide and with lettering, that is added into the paper during the drying process. Once added, a special tool is used to scrape the wet paper off only above the thread, and usually in a particular pattern, thus exposing alternate areas of the embedded thread.
UV-Ultraviolet (Fluorescent)When viewed in a darkened area, and exposed to a special low or high frequency UV light, a design, value, or paper fibers will glow.
WatermarkExtensively used as a security measure, the watermark is created by a raised design on a drying cylinder applied towards the end of the paper manufacturing process. The raised design causes a thin area in the paper which when held to the light reveals an image. This image can be words, design, or a portrait. Recent developments have made graduations available. Thus, rather than a light/dark watermark, a gradual light to dark face can be achieved.
